Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is a commonly used modality in veterinary physiotherapy, particularly to reduce inflammation, pain, and swelling following injury or surgery. The application of cold causes vasoconstriction (narrowing of blood vessels), which reduces blood flow to the area. This decrease in circulation helps to control swelling and inflammation by limiting the influx of fluid and immune cells that contribute to these processes.

Cold therapy also helps to decrease nerve conduction, which lowers the firing of pain receptors and, therefore, reduces pain. By slowing down the metabolic rate in the affected area, cold therapy minimizes the build-up of toxins and waste products, creating a healthier environment for cells to heal.

While MVetPhysio does not carry cryotherapy equipment due to the mobile nature of the service, a bag of frozen peas (or a similar cold pack) is scientifically proven to be more effective than a standard ice pack. This is because the peas conform better to the body’s contours, providing more even and efficient cooling to the affected area.

Benefits of Cold Therapy:

  • Reduces inflammation and swelling by decreasing blood flow to the area.

  • Decreases nerve conduction, which helps to alleviate pain

  • Slows metabolic activity, helping to prevent tissue damage from excessive swelling or inflammation

  • Minimizes toxin build-up in injured tissues, promoting a healthier healing environment

  • Prevents further tissue injury by controlling overactive inflammation
